Twelve o'clock apparent time, or the instant the apparent sun is over the upper branch of the meridian.

Shadows are shortest and point true north every day at "local
apparent noon." That's when the Sun crosses the meridian due south, halfway between sunrise and sunset, and it has little to do with noon by the clock.
