Arbalest
missile weapon, widespread in Western European countries in the Middle Ages. It consisted of an iron bow fixed on a wood mounting (gunstock); the bowstring was stretched by a windlass. The arbalest fired a short arrow. In Russia the arbalest was called a samostrel.
