A system for enriching the air-fuel mixture in a cold automotive engine when the accelerator is first depressed; the choke plate opens automatically when the engine achieves normal operating temperature.

The problem sounds like an
automatic choke fault (probably the cold start or oxygen sensors), and I'd take up the suggestion of an AA or RAC inspection - as long as Skoda agree to cover the cost.
