backer strip

An asphalt-coated water-repellent strip which is applied behind the joint where the vertical edges of two shingles meet.

The backer is a moving strip or card behind the target, so even though the bullets go through the same hole, with indecipherable differences per shot, the backer strip moves back and forth to show all shots were taken.
Cut two 1"x2" backer strips of wood and place them inside the opening of the barrel so that the screws will have something other than the plastic to hold to (see Photo 2).
