A strip of metal attached at a pipe joint at the root of a weld to prevent spatter and to ensure the integrity of the weld.

The spacing pegs located radially around the
backing ring were removed before joint set-in.
The dust seal is affixed to the
backing ring in this improved assembly, thereby allowing the hydraulic system to extract the entire assembly back from the rotor end.
Seals include Nitrile O-rings with Teflon
backing rings or several optional seal materials, including Ethylene-Propylene, Viton and Neoprene.
In service, installation takes place on the same
backing rings used with the bronze.
