(astronomy)
A peculiar, low-velocity, strong-lined red giant or subgiant star of spectral type G, K, or M, whose spectrum has anomalously strong lines of barium, sometimes with strong bands of methyldadyne (CH), molecular carbon (C2), and cyanogen radical (CN).

Abell 70 has an unusual binary central star composed of a white-dwarf star and a dwarf or subgiant barium star. A barium star is enriched in barium and other elements that it's not evolved enough to produce.
Similarly, observations made by IUE confirmed that barium stars have white-dwarf companions.
