Usually the ocean is weakly stratified near the coast and mesoscale processes, including continental shelf waves, can be considered as barotropic waves. In the seas of the World Ocean like the Yellow Sea, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea etc., water stratification is of greater importance, influencing the appearance of topographically trapped waves and their parameters.
