Liverpudlian Philip Scarisbrick, who supplied
benzocaine to the group and was jailed for nine-and-a-half years, argued he should not be the subject of an order because he didn't have a "leading role".
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned parents about adverse effects of oral teething medications which contain
benzocaine.1 It has been stated that
benzocaine can cause an atypical, but grave, side effect in children of less than 2 years of age, known as Methaemoglobinaemia.1,3 Symptoms usually appear after the first dose or after several uses of this oral agent.
On May 17, 2016, 30.76kg of
benzocaine addressed to a home in Stoke-on-Trent was seized at Manchester Airport.
The 37-year-old helped provide the mixing agent
benzocaine, used to bulk out cocaine, to outfits whose patches included Holyhead, Llandudno, Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.
Officers also retrieved scales showing traces of cocaine, ketamine, cannabis and
benzocaine, plus small plastic bags.
Products with
benzocaine are intended to relieve pain from teething but also sore throat, canker sores and other conditions, and come in a variety of product forms.
"We urge parents, caregivers and retailers who sell them to heed our warnings and not use over-the-counter products containing
benzocaine for teething pain," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, in a statement.
As with Baby Oral Pain Relief, the tablets dissolve quickly in the mouth and are free of
benzocaine.
Desperate for sleep, many parents of infants use an internal, longer-lasting anti-inflammatory at night and switch to frequent applications of a short-term topical numbing agent, like
benzocaine, for daytime relief.
Avoid products such as
benzocaine as they can irritate the skin or may cause allergy.
Additionally, Camilia does not contain
benzocaine, alcohol, flavors, dyes, lactose, sugar or artificial sweeteners.
Other additives include
benzocaine and lignocaine, which are local anaesthetics used in dentistry, caffeine and phenacetin, a painkiller banned in several countries as overuse was linked to cancers.
