[′bī‚kwȯrts] (optics)
A device consisting of two adjoining pieces of quartz of equal thickness that rotate the plane of polarization of light in opposite directions; used with a Nicol prism or other analyzer to increase the accuracy of the latter in determining the properties of polarized light.
