The rate of departure, or closing, of a target relative to the radar antenna at which cancellation of the primary radar target by moving target indicator (MTI) circuits in the radar equipment causes a reduction or complete loss of signal. In MTI or pulse Doppler radars, radial target speeds that result in the target range changing by multiple half-wavelengths in the interval between the pulses. Under these conditions, the target is invisible to the radar. Also called blind velocity.

Diversity is widely used in radar signals, beginning with diversity of the pulse interval (Chapter 8), which mitigates blind speeds. More elaborate diversity schemes are presented in Chapter 9, with emphasis on step-frequency pulses.
