"As part of this project, our StreetCare teams have planted floral displays of yellow marigolds and
blue salvia's underneath the sculptures to mimic the water of the Dee running through the Cheshire Plains.
It's possible that most gardeners have not considered partnering annual salvias like Saucy with perennial salvias like Golden Delicious pineapple sage, the Mysty
Blue salvia, or the supercharged Black and Bloom.
But I wasn't completely done with the sunny side - my very favourite flowers for pots, some gorgeous
blue salvia spires, set beside some agapanthus (African lilies) and exquisite white patio rose flanked with pink cosmos complete the picture.
Annuals such as
blue salvia and rows of bright magenta petunias add pops of season-long color and fill in a buffer zone Simone has left around the perennials.
Other patriotic planting suggestions on the RHS website (www.rhs.org.uk) include red, white and blue sweet peas, red salvia splendens, red and white tobacco plants and
blue salvia Victoria.
Pair it Vivid orange-flowered types look good with Echinacea 'Hot Lava' and
blue Salvia farinacea; hot pink ones with white sweet alyssum and Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost', or chartreuse 'Margarita' sweet potato vine.
In others it is all blues, mauves, gentle pinks and white, found in catmint, Russian sage,
blue salvia and the more quietly coloured cosmos.
Yet another stunning
blue salvia is Salvia transylvanica, whose flowers are fashioned in the form of large pincers.
Some suggestions for suitable plants are hostas, ornamental grasses, sedum, sage and hydrangeas, delphinium, iris, mint, artemisia, phlox, nicotiana,
blue salvia, lamb's ears, lavender, allium and butterfly bush.
The Black and
Blue salvia has exotic-shaped flowers and will be a great stand-alone border plant.
