A scalar data type which provides an internal representation of printable characters.

In order to keep its original precision, the coordinates can be stored as a variable character data type. Optionally, numerical data types, such as decimals, can be used, however the precision may be lost during transferring and processing.
Specifically, DB2 V6.1 will include support for 18 character table and column names, 255 character index key lengths, 32Kb SQL statement sizes and 8Kb variable character data type sizes.
