chinquapin chestnut

A chinquapin is a smaller chestnut (tree is smaller and more manageable for smaller homes). Simple shiny-on-top leaves with side veins ending in short pointy teeth. Male flowers are on “culkins”, vertical thin yellow-white horn-shaped things growing out of leaf bases. The fruit is a spike-ball with a nut inside. Taste great raw. High in starch and fiber, lower in fat than other nuts. Good source of protein. Useful for cholesterol, heart, digestive system. (available at Edible landscaping) Do not confuse with wild toxic horse chestnuts.
