cipher negotiation

Determining which algorithm to use in an encrypted communications session. When encryption is required, and one node signals another to begin a transmission session, there are often several cryptographic ciphers (algorithms) supported at each side. The negotiation process ascertains the most advanced cipher available at both sides. See cryptography and cipher.
