However, it is important to note that the 100BaseTX constrains the
collision domain distance between two repeaters to 5 meters, and between the repeaters and terminal devices to 100 meters.
The
collision domain was too large and the broadcast ratio was too high.
At the time of the original network analysis, the city had a flat network with one
collision domain. Then, as it added switches, analysis of its remote LANs became necessary.
* Lengths of the copper segments within the same
collision domain (if not given, 100 meters per segment must be assumed); and
A LAN switch interconnects any number of LAN segments that would otherwise share the same
collision domain and (in the case of Ethernet) occupy a single 10 Mb/s pipe.
By linking two stacks it is possible to have 144 ports in one
collision domain; however, having that many users in one
collision domain may not be wise tactically.
