Hirschsprung's disease

A disease caused by absence of the myenteric ganglion cells in a segment of rectum or distal colon, resulting in spasm of the affected part and dilation of the bowel proximal to the defect.

In her recent admission to the emergency department of RAK Hospital, Dr Anup Panigrahi, head of Minimal Invasive Surgery Department at the hospital, suspected her symptoms could be due to Hirschsprung's disease (congenital megacolon).
The rare disease - also known as congenital megacolon - is an illness where the patient's bowel is missing certain nerves, which can mean the bowel is blocked and cannot function properly.
"I was a sick kid, although my mother never made me feel sick," recalled Novello, who was born with congenital megacolon (an abnormally large, distorted, malfunctioning colon) that was not repaired until she was 18.
