Corbel

In masonry construction, a series of projections; each one stepped progressively outward from the vertical face of the wall as it rises up to support a cornice or overhanging member above.

1. In masonry, a projection or one of a series of projections, each stepped progressively outward with increasing height, and usually projecting from a wall or chimney; serves as a support for an overhanging member or course, 1 above, or as a purely decorative element.
2. A projecting stone that supports a superincumbent weight.
3. A heavy bracket, often decorated, that is set into an adobe wall to act as a bearing surface to support a roof beam.

The roof form recalls the distinctive hipped profile of traditional irimoya thatched roofs, still prevalent in the region, and the corbelled eaves are reminiscent of Japanese temple architecture.
Striding across the 12th arrondissement townscape to the north-east of the Rue de Lyon and the Avenue Daumesnil, the Bastille viaduct had fallen into the forlorn anonymity typical of such redundant infra-structures -- its arches occupied by a humdrum mix of small businesses, workshops, cafes, garages and the like, which had progressively obscured the fine lines and materials of the structure: red brick spandrels setting off the stonework of the vaults, piers and arches, finished off with a boldly corbelled stone cornice and blocking course.
