(1993) studied the effects of ammonium, nitrate, and aluminum on cytoplasmic streaming in wheat (Triticum aestivum) root hairs.
These authors did not consistently see a gradient in [Ca.sup.2+] along the length of root hairs and got variable results when correlating [Ca.sup.2+] concentrations and cytoplasmic streaming.
As mentioned previously (see section IV.D), auxin has been shown to influence cytoplasmic streaming in root hairs, but this does not seem to be mediated via changes in [Ca.sup.2+] levels.

(1979) Participation of [Ca.sup.2+] in cessation of cytoplasmic streaming induced by membrane excitation in Characeae internodal cells.
(1983) Control of cytoplasmic streaming by extracellular [Ca.sup.2+] in permeabilized Nitella cells.
(1982) Free [Ca.sup.2+] and cytoplasmic streaming in the alga Chara.
(1987) Phosphorylation-dephosphorylation is involved in [Ca.sup.2+]-controlled cytoplasmic streaming of Characean cells.
