damper winding

(electricity)
A winding consisting of several conducting bars on the field poles of a synchronous machine, short-circuited by conducting rings or plates at their ends, and used to prevent pulsating variations of the position or magnitude of the magnetic field linking the poles. Also known as amortisseur winding.
