The district
defender appealed the case to the Western District Court of Appeals, which ruled that a hearing should be on the record and remanded the case.
The group conducted an extensive study of how Mississippi provides lawyers to criminal defendants who can't afford their own, detailing a rickety county-by-county system where low pay may incentivize public
defenders in many counties to skimp on work at the same time that
defenders may fear fighting hard for their clients because that might upset judges who appoint them.
"I'm very much looking forward to seeing old colleagues," said Ed Nowak, who served as Monroe County Public
Defender from April 1977, until retiring at the end of 2007.
"Over the last year and half we've donated products to rescue groups, and the stories they've shared about the different ways the Shed
