The patients were living in France when chronic
delta hepatitis was diagnosed; however, because no risk factors were identified, each patient was suspected to have been infected during childhood in Africa.
The differential diagnosis of viral hepatitis includes hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C,
delta hepatitis, hepatitis E, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and cytomegalovirus (Table 3).
Chronic viral hepatitis, which results from chronic infection with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or
delta hepatitis, is often a progressive disease that can lead to cirrhosis and its attendant complications of liver failure and portal hypertension.
