In regards to the "practical" projects, defined by their functional purpose in providing direct access to information, there are vast electronic bibliographies that deliver a wide overview of subtopics and considerations on the subject, such as Stanford University's "
Digital Divide" site, hosts a thorough electronic bibliography on the topic (Stanford University 2014).
In fact, data shows that the most serious contributors to the
digital divide today are affordability of ICT services, followed closely by a lack of digital skills and the ability to use these digital technologies.
Gulf News: What do you see as the most significant challenges that the
digital divide is creating for individuals and businesses today?
Additional chapter topics include technology pedagogy, basic instruction, and social software use, as well as technology troubleshooting which West calls "the largest gap that persists between people who understand technology and those who do not." (4) West also brings to light the need for libraries to undertake better patron feedback and to re-examine library policies which may inhibit technology use as ways to address the
digital divide within the library itself.
From my perspective, by the middle of the first decade of the twenty-first century, we had become more sophisticated about our definition of the
digital divide. We had always known that the cross section of race, ethnicity, class, and gender defined the social structure of our society, and our goals were to diminish the ability of these socially constructed boxes to render individuals invisible and excluded.
The concept of
digital divide has received in the last years a great importance in dealing with growth strategy at the national or regional level.
If we are serious about improving the life chances of the most disadvantaged, we have to tackle the
digital divide, otherwise the poorest children will be left even further behind."
For me, the real
digital divide is one that transcends socio-economic barriers, and one borne of a reluctance to participate in social media.
For many years the term
digital divide referred to the gap between those with and without access to digital and information technology.
