e-prescribing

(Electronic-PRESCRIBING) The electronic creation and distribution of medical prescriptions from doctors to pharmacists. Using a computer, the doctor can review drug and formulary coverage and print the prescription for the patient or transmit it directly to the pharmacy. The data may also be added to the patient's electronic health record (EHR). See healthcare IT.

Recently, an article on the topic of e-prescription mandates ("E-prescribing: What's now and what's coming") written by SigmaCare CEO Steve Pacicco was published on healthmgttech.com.
In an effort to overcome the disadvantages of written prescriptions, e-prescribing has been implemented in countries such as the USA, with use increasing by 72% between 2009 and 2010.
Minnesota enacted an e-prescribing mandate in 2008, with a compliance date of 2011.
The findings are similar to a 2013 report that concluded that doctors who have access to formulary information when they prescribe electronically tend to prescribe drugs with lower co-pays for patients, Decision Resources, a research and consulting firm in Burlington, Mass., surveyed primary care physicians and endocrinologists who prescribed electronically to at least 25 patients a year, either in their EHR systems or in stand-alone e-prescribing systems.
The study, which used data from the Surescripts e-prescribing network, found the percentage of health care providers using e-prescribing rocketed from 7% in late 2008 to 54% in late 2012.
Physicians adopted e-prescribing more enthusiastically following the implementation of federal incentive programs, a study in Health Affairs found.
