The DOD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms defines SIGINT as "A category of intelligence information comprising all communications intelligence (COMINT), electronics intelligence (ELINT) and telemetry intelligence." Very basically, SIGINT involves the reception and characterization of electromagnetic radiation and the processing and classification of this data into intelligence.
The January 1986 edition of the "DOD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms" defines signal intelligence as "A category of intelligence information comprising all communications intelligence (COMINT), electronics intelligence and telemetry intelligence.
