emerging flux regions

(EFRs) New areas of intense localized magnetic field in the solar photosphere that are invariably the precursor of active regions. They are characterized by a small area of faculae in white light and by a small bipolar plage connected by a few short arch filaments (see prominences) in the monochromatic light of certain strong Fraunhofer lines.
