It depicts an elaborate lawn party the Stettheimers held in honor of Duchamp, a member of their circle (as well as Florine's French tutor), and is called La Fete a Duchamp, a play on the guest of honor's name and a genre of outdoor entertainment--the
fete champetre. It takes place outside the city in a property rented for the summer by the Stettheimer women--Florine, her two sisters, Ettie and Carrie, and their mother, Rosetta--and it is marked by the leisurely passage of time, from afternoon to evening, as we see the same personages engaging in various genteel recreations from the moment of Duchamp's arrival to the dinner itself, held under lanterns in an open tent at the back of the property, where one of the sisters raises a toast to Duchamp, who lifts a glass in acknowledgment.
