Inflammation of the pericardium involving the deposition of fibrin and leukocytes between the layers of the pericardium; seen in rheumatic carditis and acute infectious diseases.

Postmortem findings included diffuse alveolar damage, pleural effusions, and fibrinous pericarditis. No postmortem microbiologic testing was done.
The epicardium was thickened by a friable tan material presumed to be the result of chronic fibrinous pericarditis (Fig 2).
Also, we observed a fibrinous pericarditis with markings from the VAD tubing along the epicardium; however, the VAD was not sent for pathologic review.
