A wall inside a building intended to retard fire.

fire partition

In a building, a partition which has a fire-endurance rating of not less than 2 hr, but does not qualify as a fire wall.

It is important to learn the differences between a fire wall, fire barrier, and fire partition and between a smoke barrier and smoke partition, so that you can properly apply (or not apply) fire and smoke dampers.
Fire Partitions (IBC Section 708) are the minimum-rating level of the various types of fire-rated walls.
* Limiting glazed opening in fire partitions to no more than 25% of the wall area.
Fire barriers, firewalls, fire partitions, and smoke barriers are all included in compartmentation.
