Without the reduction of existing stockpiles of
fissile materials, suspending its future production would leave Pakistan at disadvantageous position relative to India's larger nuclear stockpiles.
On the other hand, these steps have been weakening the NPT as Indian access to international market to acquire
fissile material enabled it to divert domestically produced material for WMDs production without any practical hurdle.
Critics also note that North Korea has already produced a stockpile of
fissile material with which to build more bombs.
[U.S.A.], July 26 ( ANI ): US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that North Korea was still producing
fissile material.
Evidence collected since the June 12 summit in Singapore points to preparations to deceive the United States about the number of nuclear warheads in North Korea's arsenal as well as the existence of undisclosed facilities used to make
fissile material for nuclear bombs, according to the report.
"North Korea will forever be a state which has nuclear weapons or
fissile materials."
Pakistan began its quest for
fissile material with the establishment of an enrichment facility in the early 90s.
"Euratom has the right to sequester
fissile material in extreme circumstances but it is a historical throwback reflecting the world as it was when the treaty was negotiated in the 1950s and there was a threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union," said Timothy Abram, professor of nuclear fuel technology at Manchester university.
This isotope is
fissile, meaning that upon collision with a neutron it breaks up--fissions--into other elements, releasing energy and more neutrons that can continue the chain reaction.
"To that end, we seek to cut off the four pathways that Iran could take to obtain enough
fissile material for a nuclear weapon," he added.
