fixed pixel display

All modern flat panel displays use a matrix of pixels that are fixed in size horizontally and vertically. If the input signal is not the same resolution as the TV's display, complex algorithms adjust (scale) the resolution up or down to conform to the number of pixels in each row. See DTV and flat panel TV.
