When flash photolysis was applied instead of 20 Hz stimulation, the Ca sensitivity of release was decreased by a factor of 2, indicating that the intrinsic Ca sensitivity of fast releasing vesicles is heterogeneous (the remaining vesicles after 20 Hz stimulation are slower by a factor of 2).
In this experiment, Ca was uniformly elevated to a high level (>10 pM) within the terminal by flash photolysis of a caged-Ca compound.
To complete the photophysical characterization of the synthesized materials, laser
flash photolysis studies were carried out to determine the transient absorption spectra of the dyes incorporated into the SSO matrix.
For this purpose, we used laser
flash photolysis for the indirect detection of [sup.1][O.sub.2] formation via triplet lifetime measurement, which can be related to the [sup.1][O.sub.2] generation.

The triplet states of BPBnzx in a degassed solution of acetonitrile were investigated by laser
flash photolysis. After irradiation with laser pulses (355 nm) the spectra of BPBnzx showed the characteristic peak at 490 nm (see Fig.
[sup.1]H NMR spectra were measured on a 400 MHz spectrometer (JEOL DATUM JNM-ATUM]) with the same concentrations used in the laser
flash photolysis studies.
Introduced by Howard Alper, FCIC, Scaiano's talk 'Laser Applications in the Study of Organic Reaction Mechanisms' followed a personal and humorous history of laser
flash photolysis techniques in understanding physical organic chemistry.
These studies make freuent use of nonsecond laser
flash photolysis methods, and are carried out on his recently completed, home-built system.
