[′flip ‚kȯil] (electromagnetism)
A small coil used to measure the strength of a magnetic field; it is placed in the field, connected to a ballistic galvanometer or other instrument, and suddenly flipped over 180°; alternatively, the coil may be held stationary and the magnetic field reversed.
