As in the case of the control of eye position by the flocculus described above, elemental movements allowing the optimization of joint position are assumed by distinct cerebellar areas.

To verify this idea, the team administered local anaesthetic to the flocculus and studied its effect on learning.
Visual input to the VNC arises from a subcortical pathway which includes the accessory optic tract, the medullary reticular formation and prepositus hypoglossi; however, visual information also converges on the VNC via the cerebellar flocculus and inferior olive, and a diversity of other sensory information (e.g, proprioceptive and somatosensory input from the spinal cord) is also integrated within the VNC.
The evidence for cerebellar damage is supported by two experimental findings: (1) the increase in the postsynaptic potentials produced by gamma aminobutyric acid in the vestibulooculomotor system and (2) the increase in the rate of Purkinje's cell discharge at the cerebellar flocculus. [11] Deficits in some cranial nerves (V and VII) can also occur, so facial paralysis and impairment of the Vth cranial nerve are not considered to be rare in phenytoin toxicity.
