The value of these fluids is realized when a magnetic field is applied; micron sized ferrous particles suspended in the fluid align parallel to the
flux path, creating particle chains.

Flux Path Mutually Coupled Switched Reluctance Machine", Ph.D.
Hence, the thickness of PM is the dominant part in the
flux path. However, for PMV machines, the harmonics in air-gap are used to produce torque, which means that PMV machines are very sensitive to the air-gap length.
If the main pole saturates, the reluctance of that
flux path will increase.
where reluctance R is the inverse of permeance, the
flux path length for each element is L, and
flux path width W is simplified to the width of the core.
Figure 5(b) shows a flux barrier rotor made of standard flat laminations, where the flux barriers are punched in the traditional way in order to obtain the preferred
flux path. Thin ribs are left when punching, thus connecting to each other the various rotor segments.
Unlike the radial
flux path found in most conventional motors, the flux flows through the stator parallel to the shaft.
This is a 25 percent increase in torque over earlier models and the higher torque is produced by a triple
flux path within the unit.
