A read/write head used on magnetic disks and drums, so designed that it flies a microscopic distance off the moving magnetic surface and is supported by a film of air.

flying head

A read/write head that "flies" over a magnetic disk. The heads are attached to a slider, which is a block of material that acts as an airfoil. The slider's shape and contour, which is designed for a particular disk speed, determine how high it flies. See flying height.
