Even something as fundamental as a focimeter reading from current spectacles aligns the optometrist with the clinical associations to be considered eg, a patient who is -8.00DS is more prone to retinal tears and detachments, so the optometrist will already be thinking about this possibility in their examination.
The focimeter can be used to discover the powers of the cleaned RGP lenses and the results compared to those noted in the records.
After developing this first instrument, the academic support officer went onto build, amongst other things, a progressive lens measurement machine that he patented, and a scanning focimeter which second-year optometry students at Aston University use today.
They are also known as focimeters. The introduction of projection lensometers dates back to 1922.
