foehn phase
[′fān ‚fāz] (meteorology)
One of three stages to describe the development of the foehn in the Alps: the preliminary phase, when cold air at the surface is separated from warm dry air aloft by a subsidence inversion; the anticyclonic phase, when the warm air reaches a station as the result of the cold air flowing out from the plain; and the stationary phase or cyclonic phase, when the foehn wall forms and the downslope wind becomes appreciable.

The reported intense foehn phases are generally reproduced with a lag of [+ or -] 1-3 h in the DEM (same lags in #27 and #51), but the simulation does not clearly indicate that the winds were stronger (weaker) at Zurich (Glarus) at noon compared to the early morning hours (not shown).
