Moylan Jr., commissioner of public works and parks, said the project involves installing about 3,800 feet of a "PVC slip-liner" into the existing 24-inch-diameter pre-cast concrete pipe, or
force main.
It was pulled off without a hitch when the city and county of Honolulu completed one of the longest and largest sewer
force main installations in the United States using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and microtunneling trenchless technologies.
CDM will perform hydraulic analyses and design services for the Creve Coeur pump station and a 19,000-foot
force main, increasing capacity from 43 to 129 mgd.
The project has RJN providing preliminary and final design, bidding assistance and construction assistance services for sewer improvements including design of 10,700 continuous linear feet of gravity sewer increasing diameter up to 30 inches; and design of a new 19,500 linear feet 24-inch parallel
force main. The project will take 18 months to complete and be broken up into multiple phases.
Historically, wastewater system operators have found it difficult to take a pro-active approach to
force main maintenance because accessing buried pipes is difficult and costly and the use of conventional closed circuit television (CCTV) inspection equipment usually means the system must be shut down which requires a bypass system.
