Features such as internal grooves, splines, threads and so on can be accommodated by companies that will manufacture measuring heads to enable the easy
gaging of the trickiest of internal measuring problems.
One of the first parameters for selecting a particular gaging system is whether the application requires attribute- or variable-type part measurements.
Attribute gaging is generally indicated for applications where the life of the tool that generates the gaged characteristic is predictable, and where anticipated process variation is relatively low (producing a CpK or CP of 1.33 or more) or not important.
Kurt developed an SPC/Gaging system that uses modular gaging for the foundation of all gages it manufactures.
"This has been a tremendous aid to our customers who need to get a capable fixture gaging system on-line quickly for their production start-up."
Kurt also manufactures modular fixtures with digital or analog dial indicators, although Mr Stout says these systems account for less than 10% of the company's gaging business.
The cost savings possible using the modular gaging are illustrated by Allison Turbine Engine Div, which purchased seven modular fixtures to replace dedicated gages.
There are 20 postprocess-feedback gaging systems in the gear area, running in both the line and individual operations.
Modular interchangeable tooling used in the Edmunds gaging system helps make this flexibility possible.
The grinder can't compensate itself for process variation-that's why you use in-process
gaging.
"This is a tremendous boon to users," points out Walter Funke of Sheffield Measurement's
Gaging Systems Operation, Dayton, OH.
Gaging systems also help you lengthen tool life, increase speeds and feeds, machine to closer tolerances, document quality, and satisfy customer demands.
