navigation system

An electronic system in a vehicle or mobile device that provides a real-time map of the current location and step-by-step directions to a requested destination. Often called a "GPS," a navigation system (nav) receives signals from the satellite-based global positioning system (see GPS). See reality view, Google Maps, Waze, CarPlay, Android Auto, in-dash navigation and portable GPS.


A Very Useful Cross-Street Feature
Under normal conditions, street signs are difficult to see, but much worse at night or in harsh weather. When not in directions mode where each turn is given, this Garmin nav displays the next cross-street ahead.
