The study described here examines the association of haematological indices (haemoglobin,
haematocrit, mean cell volume, and red cell count) with BP variables in a populationbased sample of Ghanaians, with a view to determine any relation between blood viscosity and systolic and diastolic blood pressure and to explore whether any such relationships are explained by differences in body mass index (BMI).
Blood sample was collected by cardiac puncture11 and divided into two portions for estimation of
haematocrit by hematology analyzer (NIHON-KOHDEN) and separation of serum for estimation of sodium and potassium concentration by flame photometry.
Haematocrit (HCT) values increased significantly with the increase in dietary protein levels from 25% to 45% protein containing diets (P<0.05).
Creatinine slowly declined and haemoglobin and
haematocrit levels slowly rose.
Similarly, the mean values of
haematocrit, MCV, MCH and lymphocytes also exhibited the same trend.
Changes in maternal haemoglobin concentration and
haematocrit value at the end of gestation, placental morphology and foetal haemoglobin concentration and haemotocrit value at birth were used as indicators for the degree of maternal, placental and fetal hypoxia respectively.
Results: It was found that Aloe vera extract did not cause significant change in body weight and urine sodium concentration, caused a slight fall in
haematocrit, rise in serum sodium concentration within normal range and no change in serum potassium concentration.
Data on acute dengue status, total white cell count, platelet count,
haematocrit, and alanine transaminase (ALT) level were retrieved for each patient from the hospital's laboratory information system.
Preoperative and postoperative (6-24 hours)
haematocrit or haemoglobin values were measured.
