The origin of the tumor is thought to be from sources that include residual epithelium of the tooth-forming apparatus, such as the epithelial cell rests of Malassez; epithelium of odontogenic cysts; basal cells of the surface epithelium; epithelium of the enamel organ; and
heterotopic epithelium from extraoral sites, such as the pituitary gland.
On histopathological examination of the diverticulum, mucosa showed no evidence of heterotopic epithelium (Figure 3).
In 20% of cases, mucosa contains heterotopic epithelium. It is usually difficult to demonstrate by contrast radiography.
