The modern CNC
hobbing machines permit the radial motion of the workpiece-table and the axial movement of the tool.
Manufacturers of mud motors are experiencing
hobbing cycle times less than half those of milling while also saving most of the time required to polish.
In light of these developments, MHI will leverage its broad lineup of dry-cut
hobbing machines for everything from rough processing to finishing to propose new solutions for mass-producing the smaller and higher-precision gears demanded on automatic transmission system production floors.
Markus Grob, president of MAG Europe, says the "ability to integrate turning and
hobbing operations in a single machine will bring customers considerable savings."
This can be the oil used in gear
hobbing or the paraffin used in bore honing machines or the oil in quench tanks, which can also be prone to spontaneous combustion.
Taru, E; Teodorescu, M- On the dependence of torque moment and cutting force on the work material hardness during gears
hobbing, Galati, Fascicula V, anul V, 1987;
Since developing the world's first dry cutting gear production system using no cutting fluid in 1997, MHI has expanded its dry-cut product offerings, including machine tools such as gear
hobbing machines and gear shaping machines as well as cutting tools such as super dry hobs and super dry gear shaper cutters.
offers the 210H Hobber, suited for dry
hobbing. The work area is isolated from the machine frame to minimize thermal expansion caused by contact with hot chips.
Parts are honed after
hobbing, but on tight-tolerance gears, blanks might be honed before and after
hobbing.
But making an internal gear takes shaping--a slower, more painstaking process than the simpler
hobbing of an external gear.
The plant features vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers, CNC lathes, CNC gear
hobbing, gear shaping and horizontal broaching capability, which allows the company to handle single piece prototype, as well as higher volume machining operations, Rod Link said.
