Leaves opposite, connected around a round, hairy stem. White, purple, greenish flowers, bright red fruit, sometimes orange, yellow or white. Dried, roasted berries used as coffee substitute. Leaves and especially root tea used to stabilize menstrual issues, urinary issues, constipation, indigestion, diarrhea, headache, colic, diuretic.
