hydroplaning

A condition that can exist when a high-speed aircraft lands on a water-covered runway. Water forms a fine film between tires and the runway surface, thus rendering braking relatively ineffective. It can cause aircraft to skid. An effective antiskid system can prevent hydroplaning. Runway grooving is the most effective method of preventing hydroplaning. The rule of thumb for determining the minimum hydroplaning speed in knots is to multiply the square root of the tire pressure in psi by 8.6. The degree of hydroplaning depends on the amount of tire surface that is under water. See aquaplaning.

The court heard that the plane had wide, lowinflated tyres which were designed for marsh or rough terrain landing and that hydroplaning was recommended by the manufacturers of the Maule.
One of the first problems associated with the tire's influence on active safety of a car was the hydroplaning problem.
The minimum speed in knots at which dynamic hydroplaning will begin is computed by 9 times the square root of the main gear tire pressure.
Wet conditions also increase your chances of hydroplaning (skimming over the water surface with no road contact).
CAUSES: Going too fast around a corner, hydroplaning over standing water, driving over ice or braking too hard.
When in operation the hydrodynamic journal bearing, described by AxFlow as a fluid boundary forming principal, eliminates contact between the shaft and the bearing in the pump by hydroplaning above the bearing surface on a cushion of liquid.
Pervious pavement can improve safety by eliminating ponding, the effects of hydroplaning, and glare at night.

According to Jason Harrington, an asphalt pavement engineer with FHWA, with an open-graded friction in course aggregate like slag, the roadway does not experience as much spray or misting during rain, offering better visibility and much less hydroplaning.
