Pitfalls in the diagnosis of
hypoadrenocorticism in dogs.
Ultrasonographic evaluation of the adrenal glands in six dogs with
hypoadrenocorticism. J Am Anim Hosp Assoc.
Used in the diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism or
hypoadrenocorticism.
The most dependable screening method for both hyper- and
hypoadrenocorticism, however, is an ACTH stimulation test, which assesses the response of the adrenal glands to a test dose of the pituitary hormone.
The medically descriptive name for Addison's disease is
hypoadrenocorticism, referring to inadequate adrenal gland secretion.
A less common problem is Addison's disease or
hypoadrenocorticism. The adrenal glands produce both the stress hormone cortisol and aldosterone, a hormone necessary for life because it helps conserve sodium.
Fluid and electrolyte therapy in endocrine disorders: diabetes mellitus and
hypoadrenocorticism. Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, Philadelphia, v.38, p.699-717, 2008.
Also referred to as
hypoadrenocorticism, Addison's disease results from reduced hormone production by the adrenal glands.
In Addison's disease (also called
hypoadrenocorticism), the body does not produce enough Cortisol or water-regulating hormones (called mineralocorticoids).
