The reduction in the production of one or more polypeptide chains generally results in the development and hypochromic microcytic anemia. Since the reduction of the synthesis may be total or partial, thalassemias are classified according to the affected globin chain, alpha, beta, delta, delta-beta, and gamma-delta-beta.
