Severe
hypomagnesaemia was defined as magnesium serum levels < 1 mg/dL (1).
Hypomagnesaemia in milking cows: The response of serum magnesium to alterations in herbage composition resulting from potash and nitrogen dressings on pasture.
A study by Kundu et al labels
hypomagnesaemia as a marker for risk of development of retinopathy in diabetic patients with mean magnesium levels of 1.30 +- 0.39 in patients with diabetic retinopathy 2 .
Hypocalcaemia and
hypomagnesaemia was seen in 16% (4/25) and 12% (3/25) neonates, respectively.
Kurzel13 investigated the effect of serum magnesium levels in pregnancy on preterm labor and indicated that
hypomagnesaemia (magnesium equal to or <1.4 mg/dl) can be considered as a marker for true preterm labor.
(4) Even though serum magnesium values were not available in patients' charts, we believe that
hypomagnesaemia may have also contributed to arrhythmias, as previously reported.
However, they are not without side effects, and several warnings have been issued by the Food and Drug Agency of the United States about the risk of
hypomagnesaemia, possibility of increased fracture risk, and reduction in efficacy of clopidogrel by concomitant use of proton pump inhibitors.
Once the patient has been stabilised, the underlying cause should be sought and treated (correct the hypokalaemia and
hypomagnesaemia and discontinue all long QT-prolonging drugs).
Hungry bone syndrome (HBS) refers to a severe, rapid and prolonged hypocalcemia associated with hypophosphatemia and
hypomagnesaemia that are the consequences of suppressed parathyroid hormone levels at patients with prior high bone turnover [1-6, 9, 11, 12].
However on investigations blood biochemistry revealed hypokalaemia (serum potassium of 2.5 mEq/L) and on further workup
hypomagnesaemia as well (Serum Magnesium- 1.5 mg/dL) with normal serum sodium (140 mEq/L), and creatine kinase (CK) levels (167 U/L).
While traditionally regarded as encompassing the significant metabolic disorders of dairy cows (hypocalcaemia,
hypomagnesaemia and ketosis), the term 'production disease' has been broadened to include conditions such as retained placenta, displacement of the abomasum and laminitis.
