(computer science)

The moment of time at which a specified change of state occurs; usually marks the completion of an asynchronous input/output operation.

(geology)

An incident of probable tectonic significance, but whose full implications are unknown.

(industrial engineering)

A specified accomplishment in a program at a particular time; appears as a node in a graphic representation of an endeavor with a specific objective (project).

(physics)

A point in space-time.

(statistics)

A mathematical model of the result of a conceptual experiment; this model is a measurable subset of a probability space.

An occurrence or happening of significance to a task or program, such as the completion of an asynchronous input/output operation. A task may wait for an event or any of a set of events or it may (request to) receive asynchronous notification (a signal or interrupt) that the event has occurred.

(1) An action initiated by the user or the computer. For example, a user event would be any mouse movement or keystroke. An internal event detected by software could be caused by myriad things from unexpected data in the input to a security camera sensing motion. See event driven, event loop, event handler and event management system.

(2) A movie or video clip in the iMovie video editing application on the Mac.
