inactive front

[in′ak·tiv ′frənt]
(meteorology)
A front, or portion thereof, that produces very little cloudiness and no precipitation, as opposed to an active front. Also known as passive front.

This produces sinking motion and fair weather, and the result is a katafront, "inactive front," or "dry front." These systems are often seen in the central United States, and most of the weather will be ahead of them.
There remains a theory, as outlined in the Guardian story, that the soldier was posing for a photograph when he was picked off by a sniper who was still present on an inactive front. ICP, which was founded by Robert Capa's brother, Cornell Capa, provides this assessment of "The Falling Soldier":
